70s Boots – Gogo Boots History
The word ‘Gogo’ originated from a very old French word – ‘la gogue’, which meant joy or happiness. In the early 60s ‘go’ was used to mean ‘all the rage’ or ‘happening’, however how it got into the Disco scene was probably due to the opening of Whisky a Go-Go way back in 1958 and it was to become America’s first real discothèque.
The original 60s Gogo boots had low or flat heels, and could be calf, below or above the knee in length. The front or toe area would be rounded, chiseled or pointed. A zipper on the side was included, but the 70s boots could also have lace-ups to take into account the many different calf sizes, as well as heel sizes varying from flat up to 2 inches high.
Prior to Gogo boots, women’s boots were mainly designed for outdoor rugged activities such as walking during bad weather, sports such as horse riding, gardening etc., but the sixties and seventies changed all that. Instead of boots being dowdy with boring colors like gray or green they became fashionable items in white or many other ‘stand out from the crowd’ colors.
Whatever color or style you choose enjoy your 70s Boots, and relive those cool happy disco party times.
