Having looked at a few of those disco fashion dresses let’s now take a look at some classic disco dance moves of the 1970s.
Unlike most of the older, more “traditional” styles of dancing, disco dancing can either be performed with a partner or you can go solo or as it’s often referred to as goin’ freestyle.
The moves a solo dancer performs are different to when partnered as there is more floor space for the dancer unless you are doing some kind of synchronized dancing with your partner in which case your dancing side by side instead of facing each other. One classic freestyle move is the Back Catch, where the dancer will stand on one leg, and at the same time kicks the other leg up in the air and back again, as they do so they will reach for their arms over head as if they are trying to catch their foot behind them, a tricky move. The real ‘show offs’ will perform things like the splits, spins, jumps, kicks and cross-kicks, but these take quite some practice to pull off, especially as they’ll soon attract a large crowd as others watch in amazement so the dancer wants to get it right and they will often spend hours at home or in a dance studio learning to get it right and perform it dead on the beat of the sound track.

Partnered dance routines can either be performed by couples or groups, depending upon the skills of the dancers and the moves they have learned together. One such move is the Electric slide or Clarence Carter’s ‘Strokin’ which both are large pattern-based line dances and are considered to be the most enduring disco dance moves. Other typical disco dance moves like hand rotating and raising the arms or stepping side to side, standard hip and pelvic movements, turning around, planting the foot on the floor with the beat, tilting the shoulders up and down while stepping forward and backward are some of the disco dance steps used to create the classic disco dance moves we we have seen and heard about so much.
